Types

There are several types of drug delivery devices that are used for a variety of medical purposes. Some of the major types are:

Syringes: Drug Delivery Device are one of the most basic and commonly used drug delivery devices. They are used to inject medications like vaccines, insulin, antibiotics and more through various routes like intramuscular, subcutaneous etc. Disposable plastic syringes are generally used for single patient use to maintain sterility. Reusable glass syringes are also available.

Auto-injectors: Auto-injectors are spring-loaded syringes that allow for self-injection of epinephrine and other drugs, especially during an emergency. They are designed for easy use without requiring the user to handle the needle. This makes auto-injectors suitable for emergency drugs and for patients requiring self-administration of medications like allergy treatments.

Injectpens: Injectpens are pen shaped devices that are used for injecting insulin or other injectable drugs in a similar fashion to an auto-injector but with some additional features. They often contain a pre-filled cartridge of the drug and allow for measuring and delivery of preset doses through a concealed needle. This makes injectpens suitable for self-administration of medications over an extended period by patients.

Inhalers: Inhalers are devices used for delivering medication in vapor or mist form to the lungs via inhalation. The main types are metered dose inhalers (MDI) which use propellants to deliver the medication and dry powder inhalers (DPI) which use patient inhalation to draw the powder through the device. Inhalers are primarily used to deliver respiratory medications like those used for asthma and COPD.
