Methanethiol is produced during the decomposition of organic matter by bacteria and fungi. It is one of the byproducts released when proteins and amino acids break down. For this reason, Methylmercaptan can be found in areas with decaying vegetation or in the intestines of grazing animals. On an industrial scale, Methylmercaptan is primarily synthesized by the hydrogenation of dimethyl disulfide over a nickel catalyst. This process allows for the controlled large-scale production of Methylmercaptan for use in various applications.

The thiol functional group contained within Methylmercaptan is responsible for its characteristic rotten egg smell. The human nose is incredibly sensitive to compounds containing mercaptan groups, being able to detect them at concentrations as low as 1 part per billion.
