Overviewing Compression Stockings and How Do They Work

Compression medical stockings work by applying graduated pressure from the ankle to the calf or thigh. This external pressure counteracts the hydrostatic pressure that causes blood to pool in the veins of the legs when standing or sitting. By pushing blood back up the legs, compression med

Compression levels
Compression stockings come in different compression levels depending on the pressure they apply. The three main classifications are:

Compression Stockings (15-20 mmHg): These stockings provide gentle compression and are suitable for anyone who wants to reduce fatigue in their legs. They are recommended for long periods of standing or sitting. Light compression medical stockings help improve blood circulation and can reduce swelling caused by minor varicose veins or tired leg muscles.

Medium compression (20-30 mmHg): Medium compression medical stockings are recommended for more advanced varicose veins, recurrent leg swelling, or leg discomfort. They provide firmer compression and are more effective at pushing blood back up the legs against gravity. Medium compression is suitable for people with occupations requiring long periods of standing or those who experience moderate leg swelling.

High compression (30-40 mmHg): The tightest fitting stockings that provide the highest level of graduated compression. High compression medical stockings are normally prescribed for patients with chronic leg swelling, venous insufficiency, or venous ulcers. They create significant pressure gradients in the legs that help return blood to the heart more efficiently. High compression medical stockings are only suitable for people experiencing significant leg swelling and associated symptoms.
